42 Years after the famous Tour de France 1964
...with a 1-2 win of Mustangs prepared by Alan Mann, a dutch vintage car mag gets a red 2006 Mustang out again to retrace sections of the original route.

Autovisie/NL's chief editor has done an excellent photostory for an oncoming Autovisie magazine issue in December 2006. Thanks to Christophe from levintage.com editor A.M. Roks received detailed route information to follow the traces of the historic Mustang victory.

The 2006 Tour included  the Col d'Aubisque, the famous Pau racetrack
and the Monte Turini section.

The Col d'Aubisque is a 14miles mountain etappe on the way from Cognac to Minier. Here the Minis had an advantage back then being lightweight and easy to steer around the serpentines. Surprisingly in the heavy class the Jaguars could gain some time over the Mustangs which had an disadvantage with their suspension. Going typically sideways they  had to use the full road width in 1964. Not so today.

Pau was a very small race course that included a few sections through "downtown".  The participants had to pass a few dangerous bridges and walls, but the Mustangs could flex their muscles. Due to battery problems Bo Ljungfeldt had some trouble and was later disqualified, probably because his car was pushed.  He continued the race, but without being noted.

During your next visit in Europe make sure to drive this phantastic panoramic tour or if you don't have time, at least buy the Autovisie Magazine via www.autovisie.nl
