The
Mustang GX - 1967 George Barris Design

In 2018 this design crossed the Heritage Auction block.

The Mustang GX was one of the George Barris Design under his nickname SKEET*.
At least this is suggested by todays AI search.
The Mustang GX was created as a movie car idea in October 15th, 1966. This is of special interest, since the Thunder Charger was already designed on Sept. 23, 1966.

George Barris had been aproached by The American International Pictures company to create one or maybe several custom cars for the movie Thunder Alley, to be filmed soon.

The car that was later chosen however was the Thunder Charger that Dodge provided free of charge to Barris for the planned movie.

We can only speculate that Ford gave the same promise, but the production team found Georges design of the Charger more spectacular and more appealing for the movie. Or Ford joined late.

The GX features the red, white, blue colors of the AIP movie production company, which later ended up on the Charger as well, but way more dominant.

The tricolor decorated a special rear wing that was "flowing" with the body lines.

As of now we do not have any indication or proof that the Mustang was worked on in George Barris garage, so we would like to invite you if you have any hidden Barris Kustom City listings or garage pictures where the car might have been modelled together with the Charger for a presentation.

BTW - A very similar HOT Wheels custom scale model was put on the market lately, which is called Ravenger (not a Mustang), but of course the designer would probably not see that link. Still the muscle car era influenced many of the very special custom cars back then and today

Interesting on the Mustang GX design  are also the upper sidescoops, the rear Thunderbird style lights and the forward pointing front fascia and grille. A very dynamic styling feature - which  might have also been on McHose desk for the 67 Shelby modifications, but those also also into other Barris designs.

The movie was classified ADULT ENTERTAINMENT actually. If you watch it, you may understand, why. At that time it was probably more a mirror of the car and girls scene happening then.

The Charger actually survived and is well documented in Barris KUSTOM  CITY books.

Bob Sifferd is a well-known scale model expert and brought up the link to the movie Thunder Allex to our attention in 2025, so we could finally find out more about the GX origin.
Although Geo. Barris was written on the original design that went through the auction, the link to the movie was rather found via the tricolor rear wing.
Thanks, Bob.
