First Mustang Club Of Germany
1964 - 1973 e.V.
Mustang I Prototyp
The MUSTANG I prototype carried the small 4-cylinder
and the transmission developed in Germany at that time for the Taunus 12M. This engine
was modified with 2 german Weber carburetors. (Of course we have to admit, that luckily it
was later replaced by a Six-inline and V8s.)
The prototype also carried disc brakes from the Ford UK developped Consul.
Roy Lunn, a
former Aston Martin guy, was hired to finish the prototype. The prototype was
send 1963 over to Europe for a promotion tour and appeared even at german fairs and was driven by german as well as other european magazine
editors to test its perception and driving performance..
Statistics
132.000 cars were in the ownership of US army staff stationed in Germany back in 1965.
Dont you think this was an attractive market for US-car manufacturerers besides the
german citizens?
One funny thing aside: Most accidents (85%) of US army staff people with german citizens cars however were caused by the army staff members acc. to armys statistics. Why? Well, think of those fading drum brakes, drag racers driving home, suspension failing during hard cornering etc. We do not want to mention drivers skills on winding roads or other causes.
